We’re hiring a program & farm manager!

Are you a dynamic leader, problem solver, and love people and plants? The SNAC Garden Foundation is seeking a full-time Farm and Program Manager to assist us in outreach and managing our four outdoor classrooms at North Georgetown Elementary, Longneck Elementary, Southern Delaware School of the Arts, Howard T. Ennis, and additional schools in the future. The position will also manage a community farm site at one of our school partners.

The SNAC Garden Program Manager will be responsible for managing the outdoor classroom at 4+ elementary schools which includes managing garden educators, communications with administrators, scheduling, pre-season curriculum planning and organization, and garden maintenance with the supervision of the Executive Director. The Program manager will also have some on-site teaching duties during the programming season, 2-3 times a week. This job is part remote/part on site, with most on site work done during the programming season from March-November. The Garden Program Manager will be expected to work on some Saturday’s during the season based on the outreach schedule.

The SNAC Garden Foundation’s mission is to transform schoolyards into vibrant outdoor classrooms and thriving ecosystems where students of all backgrounds, ethnicities, abilities, and socioeconomic situations have equitable access to quality environmental STEM learning and health education.

Start Date:  Mid-July 2024, Georgetown DE

Tasks include:

Administrative Management activities:

  • Assistance to the garden educators in preparing weekly curriculum items as needed to support lesson plans, assistance in curriculum development

  • Season scheduling with school administrators, which includes planning the dates that SNAC will run based on the school schedules and ensuring that the daily SNAC schedule is confirmed with teachers before the season starts

  • Communications with garden educators and school administrators for other needs and problem solving during the season

  • Writing small grants for supplies under the supervision of the Executive Director

  • Scheduling and marketing seasonal outreach events with schools such as garden build days, harvests, or other parent outreach events Attendance at ALL outreach events is not required, however we expect you to be available for some to provide support, especially for events during the season or when there are multiple outreach events that are scheduled on one day. Many outreach events during the season will fall on a Saturday.

  • Assistance with growing and managing our volunteer mailing list for events

Farm and garden management:

  • Managing garden maintenance plans across 4+ school with the support of the garden educator placed at that school, and volunteers, under the supervision of the Executive Director

  • Overseeing summer maintenance of gardens with volunteers

  • Harvesting with volunteers and students for harvest parties or community distribution of food

On-site teaching:

  • Summer on-site teaching hours are available as scheduled with each school

  • Teaching twice a week at one school partner during the growing season (Sept-Nov and April-June)

Required experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Ecology, Food Systems, Nutrition, Latin American Studies, Agriculture, or similar

Preferred Experience:

  • 2 years of experience in a managerial role or master’s degree in relevant topic

  • Six months of experience working on a vegetable production farm and/or 4 years gardening diverse vegetables in Mid-Atlantic

  • Working knowledge of Spanish and English

  • Experience working with children outdoors, especially children with special educational needs

  • 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training course, mindfulness certification (or willingness to become certified through a course provided by us once hired)

Skills:

  • Ability to work both independently and on a team, be flexible, and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, non-profit environment

  • Flexibility in schedule and hours, desire for a semi-seasonal schedule

  • Strong skills in communication, time management, reliability

  • General knowledge of Canva, Adobe, or willingness to learn

  • Microsoft office – Word and Excel

  • Ability to follow through on details and complete tasks with a minimum amount of direct supervision

  • Must be able to safely lift and carry 50 pounds repeatedly, and be willing to pitch in on garden builds and other outdoor activities

  • Ability to work outside for 6+ hours at a time

  • Strong writing skills

  • Knowledge of sustainable agriculture, ecology, and sustainable systems, or willingness to learn

  • Knowledge of local, regional and national food system issues and school food policies, or willingness to learn

Benefits and Schedule

Exempt, $38,000-42,000 depending on experience.

Flex Schedule policies; Professional development opportunities; Opportunity to work remotely from December to March; Opportunity for extended vacation time during slow season in December- March (28 days paid vacation if taken during slow season (Dec-March), 14 days paid vacation if taken in busy season (March- Nov).

Candidate must be open to work a flexible schedule, including some evenings and weekends for events
